MLK Day Community Unity Project Series

Building Bridges of Service

LaLa Speaks Foundation | January 2026

In honor of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., LaLa Speaks Foundation led Building Bridges of Service, a three-part community service series rooted in warmth, wellness, dignity, and collective care.

This project was created to meet immediate community needs while also creating space for brain health education, youth engagement, family connection, and compassionate service.

Across three St. Louis locations, LaLa Speaks Foundation brought together volunteers, community partners, media, libraries, and local organizations to serve families in a way that honored Dr. King’s legacy through action.

Where We Served

The Building Bridges of Service series took place across three community locations:
Central Downtown Library

Saturday, January 10, 2026
1301 Olive Street,
St. Louis, MO 63103

Divoll Library

Saturday, January 17, 2026
4234 N. Grand Boulevard,
St. Louis, MO 63107

Gamble Community Center

Monday, January 19, 2026
2907 Gamble Street,
St. Louis, MO 63106

Each location helped extend the reach of the project by creating a trusted community space where youth, adults, and families could receive resources, engage in meaningful activities, and feel welcomed.

What We Provided

Through this service series, LaLa Speaks Foundation distributed Winter Warmth Kits and shared wellness-centered resources with community members.

Support included:

  • New blankets
  • Hats, gloves, and socks
  • Warmth kit bags
  • Brain health and wellness resources
  • Youth and family engagement activities
  • MLK-inspired reflection activities
  • Financial literacy resources provided by Regions Bank
  • Community connection and referral support where appropriate

The series also included the Dream Like a King activity, where youth were invited to reflect on their hopes, dreams, and future goals.

Adults were invited to reflect on their wellness journey and identify one step they could take toward caring for their health.

Community Impact

Across the three activations, the Building Bridges of Service series reached families, youth, adults, volunteers, and community partners through direct service and meaningful engagement.

Series Impact Highlights
  • 35 volunteers engaged
  • 105 estimated volunteer service hours
  • 150 community members served across the series
  • 20 Winter Warmth Kits delivered to community members unable to attend in person
  • Brain health and wellness resources shared across all sites
  • Financial literacy resources provided through Regions Bank
  • Youth and adults engaged in service-centered reflection activities

At Gamble Community Center alone, the project welcomed 98 attendees and 20 volunteers. The day included powerful conversations with individuals directly impacted by brain aneurysms, including a survivor, community members who had lost loved ones, and a family member of a brain aneurysm survivor.

These moments reinforced why LaLa Speaks Foundation continues to bring brain health awareness into trusted community spaces.

Why This Work Matters

Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. taught that service is not about status. It is about showing up for one another. Building Bridges of Service reminded us that community care can be both practical and deeply personal. A blanket, a pair of gloves, a warm conversation, or a simple resource can become a bridge to trust, connection, and awareness.

For LaLa Speaks Foundation, this work also reflects a larger mission: to educate communities about brain health, raise awareness around brain aneurysms, and create spaces where people feel seen, informed, and supported before crisis happens.

Media Coverage and Community Visibility

The Building Bridges of Service series received local media and community coverage that helped amplify the importance of service, wellness, and community-based support.

FOX 2 News featured the project in a story highlighting local organizations offering resources over the MLK holiday weekend.

VOP News STL helped capture the spirit of the work through community-centered storytelling and video coverage.

Partners and Community Support

This MLK Day of Service project was supported, in part, by ServMO and the nonprofit 9/11 Day, helping us honor Dr. King’s legacy through meaningful community service. Reflection

This series was more than a distribution event. It was a reminder of what happens when people come together with compassion, purpose, and a willingness to serve.

Families came as they were. Youth shared their dreams. Adults reflected on wellness. Volunteers showed up with open hearts. Partners helped carry the message further. Building Bridges of Service showed us that service still has the power to heal, uplift, and unite.

Help Us Bring Brain Health Awareness Further

We invite community partners, volunteers, schools, libraries, healthcare providers, civic leaders, and supporters to help us bring trusted brain health awareness into more community spaces. Whether your heart calls you to partner, host an experience, or volunteer, your hands and your voice are the missing piece in this vital outreach. This work is fueled by the warmth of neighbors like you, and we welcome you to join our mission of keeping our communities informed, protected, and whole.
